my story
I grew up surrounded and immersed in art. Both in the hands on way that you might expect the daughter of an artist to, but also in a kind of internal way that effected how I made sense of the world. It was something I almost took for granted.
From raising puppies to minding celebrities.
I have enjoyed a career that has allowed me to wander down all sorts of varied and interesting paths. Qualifying as a veterinary nurse in an agricultural college where the ratio was 9:1 boys to girls, followed by a stint in London like the rest of my generation before returning to ireland to work in marketing and PR for many years..
Then a couple of things happened. My sprightly Nana of 96 passed away and the company I worked for closed its doors.
I mention my Nana because her influence on me was profound. Quite apart from the achievements of working and raising a family, my Nana had something of a rediscovery of life in her 70’s. She began travelling around the world in her 80’s, and had her first short stories published shortly after. Her achievements became part of the story of what the women in my family can do when they just go ahead and take the first step.
So, although I had been painting and drawing all of my life, the time had come: I was ready to work full time with my art.
Some time into this journey I am thankful for the opportunities that seemed to open up one after another and to those that have encouraged me to be bold and grasp each one as it arrived.
I have also brought much of my life in business to my art. Especially in the discipline that a life in business gives you. I paint almost every day, whether I feel like it or not, whether I am inspired or not. I trust that I have something to say but I work hard at improving my ability to say it.
Painting and creating art is still something of a mystery to me; but I’m OK with that, I simply put the brush to the canvas each day and take it from there.
