A list of note

In 1933, renowned author F. Scott Fitzgerald ended a letter to his 11-year-old daughter, Scottie, with a list of things to worry about, not worry about, and simply think about. It read as follows.
(Source: F. Scott Fitzgerald: A Life in Letters; via lists of note) Image: F. Scott Fitzgerald with his daughter, Scottie, in 1924.)

Things to worry about:

Worry about courage
Worry about cleanliness
Worry about efficiency
Worry about horsemanship

Things not to worry about:

Don’t worry about popular opinion
Don’t worry about dolls
Don’t worry about the past
Don’t worry about the future
Don’t worry about growing up
Don’t worry about anybody getting ahead of you
Don’t worry about triumph
Don’t worry about failure unless it comes through your own fault
Don’t worry about mosquitoes
Don’t worry about flies
Don’t worry about insects in general
Don’t worry about parents
Don’t worry about boys
Don’t worry about disappointments
Don’t worry about pleasures
Don’t worry about satisfactions

Things to think about:

What am I really aiming at?
How good am I really in comparison to my contemporaries in regard to:

(a) Scholarship
(b) Do I really understand about people and am I able to get along with them?
(c) Am I trying to make my body a useful instrument or am I neglecting it?

With dearest love,

Daddy

see no evil… & sell out at the AFF London!

See no evil…

see no evil… 80x80cm oil on canvas

This large one will be for sale at the Doorway Gallery in a week or two.

Sell out at the AFF London

The fair was a great success. 23 large paintings sold. I can hardly believe that!

Next stop the Glasgow Art Show which opens tomorrow. The Tallantyre Gallery will be there with a smaller number of my paintings available.

Meanwhile I have family visiting from Canada, my sister and my little nephew Liam and my eldest daughter is turning 13 – so there’s some serious family time going down around here.

Opening night at the Affordable Art Fair London

Just back from London and absolutely wrecked. The fair was fantastic. There was a really good buzz on the night and the work was of a very high standard – temptation at every turn!

And we got to meet some really nice people who were in the process of buying some of my paintings. What fun!

Fingers crossed the rest of the fair will go well.

Saving Grace

Saving Grace 80cm x 80cm oil on canvas

This painting is part of a commission and is loosely based on the family home of the client. I very rarely take on commissions these days as I am so busy but this one has been a joy.

Thank you to Nigel and Gráinne for this image of their painting “table for one” which now hangs in their kitchen. I love seeing a photo of one of my paintings happy in it’s new home. Brilliant!

If you have one of my paintings I would really love to see a photo of it hanging in your home. So please do send any you have!

Thanks also to everyone who emailed about the painting course in Kerry. I’ll have more info on when, how much and about the structure and content soon.
